{Choosing Contentment In a Discontented World}

DSC_0402I am currently reading the book {THE RESOLUTION REVOLUTION for Women} by Priscilla Shirer. It’s the women’s version of {THE RESOLUTION for Men} from the makers of the movie, Courageous. {<—- click here for my Movie Review}.

It’s part of a book club I do with a couple of friends. If you are interested in going through this book with me, feel free to join me here on {In Pursuit} where I will share with you some of what I’ve been reading and learning. This book can be purchased online or through your local Christian book store.

Our first chapter began with the topic of Contentment. Yikes!!! What a way to start off a chapter. And since it’s part of the book club, I couldn’t just close the book and put it away, ya’ know. We would be discussing this so it was necessary to turn the page and keep reading.

Priscilla writes,  “Discontentment: He shows up at your doorstep just like mine, eager to step inside and make himself at home. But instead of only coming for short visits on rare occasion, he refuses to leave, spreading his baggage everywhere, filling up corners of your space that you thought you’d locked up to this odious intruder. He comes. He lingers. He robs you of your years. Then before you know it, you’ve missed out on the joys in the journey, the growth that comes from battling through the difficulties, the sweet and savory experience of creating memories,” (p. 15).

I don’t know about you, but I was such a foolish 20 year old. I was always grasping for the next big thing. I was never satisfied with the here and now, never content with my current season. For many years I struggled because I knew that there was purpose and greatness for my life, yet I always felt like I could never attain it; kind of like I was always grasping for something –out there- yet never having the satisfaction of reaching it. It was a very stressful and confusing time in my life. It left me feeling inadequate and worthless.

Nothing ever seemed good enough.

The Lesson Which Has Dramatically Changed My Life…

That’s when I learned the joy of the journey. Somewhere along the line I realized that I was so focused on that place of purpose and destiny that I was missing the purpose and destiny in my today. I was missing the smiles, the laughter, the lessons, and the gifts waiting for me to unwrap each day. I learned that I could trust God with my future; that as long as my future was in His hands, I was sure to get there, wherever “there” leads me.

I’m learning to live in the present. To live in the ‘now moment’. It’s the place where cooking a meal for my family becomes holy and purposeful. It’s the place where the laughs and smiles of my children fill the air bringing deep joy. It’s the place where the loving look from my husband makes me feel beautiful and loved. I refuse to miss these moments.

I refuse to miss out on the every day wonders God is providing for me. I refuse to miss the smiles, the hugs, the warmth, the love that is being poured out over my life each morning. I refuse to be absent from my own life.

Here’s a post I put up on my Facebook page which puts is perfectly:

“I am so richly blessed! It doesn’t take money, riches, or fame to be blessed. True godliness with contentment is great gain (1 Timothy 6:6). Choosing to live a life of thanksgiving and gratitude has been life transforming. Bitterness and discontentment cannot take root in a heart that is overflowing with thanksgiving. Day by day, moment by moment. I choose gratitude. I choose praise. I choose joy. Yes indeed, I am richly blessed!”

I choose contentment in a discontented world!!!!

How about you? How will you choose to live your life?
