Cultivating Beauty In Your Life

This year I want to be intentional about cultivating beauty in my life. According to Genesis 1:27, we’re created in the image and likeness of God. If this is so, then we are creative beings. In us is the natural ability to create. It’s part of our DNA, part of who we are.

I’m reminded of the words found in Philippians 4:8, “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

Not only do I want to “think on these things”, but I want to live a life where goodness, beauty, truth, and virtue abound.

Understanding I have the ability to create, empowers me to look at my life through the lens of Philippians 4:8. Is there beauty, goodness, truth, and virtue in this? If not, why have I allowed such things to occupy space in my heart, mind, words, relationships, and home?

All truth, beauty, goodness, and virtue ultimately come from God, who in Himself embodies these characteristics. Psalms 23:5 talks about our cup overflowing. I believe that’s what our lives look like when we’re in the Presence of God continuously. When we abide in Him and He in us. Out of the abundance and generosity He pours into us, our cup overflows and we pour out around us.

There’s no alternative but to experience truth, beauty, goodness, and virtue flowing out of us. It’s up to us how we harness it and use it to create a life that exemplifies the beauty and goodness of God

The question then remains: How do I create it?

What would it look like if I looked around my home and did not see a mess that needs to be cleaned up? What would it look like if I didn’t stress out about all that needs to get done? What would it look like if the mess didn’t frustrate me?

How would my attitude change if I realized I have been given the gift to cultivate beauty in my life, in my home? What if I looked at my need to clean the home with different eyes? I don’t “have to” clean. I “get to” cultivate beauty today. I get to polish these tables. I get to shine these windows. I get to rid my home of the dust and dirt and bring the beauty back to this space. I get to create a place where order and peace reign.

What if today we cultivated beauty in our lives, cultivated beauty in our homes? Ya’ll, I’m feeling empowered, energized, and just a tad creative. I think I’ll work with that. How about you?
