Your Identity:  Remembering Who You Are

Such a small word filled with so much meaning. This chapter took me back through the years. I couldn’t help but rejoice at the way God’s truth surely penetrates the lies of the enemy. I can attest to the power of targeting the enemy’s strategies with God’s powerful word. Priscilla shares truths found in Ephesians that help us find our identity in Christ, and I’m taken back to 2013 when I shared this post with you.

We talked about Labels vs. Names this week. From personal experience, I know how difficult it is to rip these labels off. Many of my attempts have left me with some of the backing and glue stuck to  my soul. I’m learning the only way to truly rid yourself of these is with God’s truths. What does He say about you?

Here are some statements of truths we can speak to ourselves every day. They are reminders of the promises and truths found in Ephesians 1.  (Grab your Free printable)

Friends, when we don’t understand what God’s word says about our identity, we fall prey to the lies and schemes of the enemy.

Truth and understanding break through the barriers hindering us from walking in Christ’s identity for us. God’s word chips away at the strongholds lifted up by the enemy and soon that word embeds itself in our soul and we learn to discern the lies. The walls come tumbling down and we learn to walk in wholeness. We lean in and feel the healing in our souls. We learn to walk in freedom!

Your Family: Fortifying The Lives Of Those You Love

It’s taken me almost 16 years to realize that I cannot control the actions of those around me. That can be especially frustrating when it comes to those who live with us under the same roof. We can push and prod, and talk and preach, we can manipulate situations, and force things to be… yet, we cannot tell the heart which way to go. That belongs to God.

So, how does one handle situations out of our control? How do we keep our cool when all around us things seem hopeless. It’s easy to say marriage is well and children are wonderful, but nobody escapes the bumping heads that comes into each family due to sin. No one is exempt. No one is free to sit on the sidelines as though the issue were not with them. So, why not just raise our hands, “Yeah, that’s me, and I want to learn how to fight this battle the way God wants me to!”

There. We said it. We need a power greater than us to helps us do what we’re unable to do in our own strength. We need the Spirit of God to move us, humble us, give us repentant hearts, and enable us to forgive. Only then can we truly stand in the gap for those who hurt us (within close proximity)*. And of course, God does that for those who we might hurt or offend. It’s the beauty of family. The beauty of how God chooses to represent Himself to the world (our marriages), and how He choses to pass faith from generation to the next (our children).

Prayer is the portal by which we access the resources available to us. It’s the way we target specific areas and it’s the way we invite God into the battle. We partner with Him and His resources are available to us. What seemed impossible in the physical, is possible in the supernatural. What we’re unable to control and change in the natural, God is able to work out for His glory as we seek Him in prayer.

Oh, how I wish we could break down these chapters further. How I wish we could gather around the table and really dig in… because sometimes family issues can be some of the most difficult. I don’t want to undermine your specific family situation, but this space doesn’t allow me to dive into every area. And so, since miles separate us, I’ll simply pray these short weeks together through this book/study, would serve to open your eyes to the schemes of the enemy as well as to the resources available to you. I pray they would be an encouragement as you recognize you are not alone!

If you haven’t already done so, I’d encourage you to grab your copy of Fervent, A Woman’s Battle Plan to Serious, Specific and Strategic Prayer. Let’s grow in this area together, yes?!

May God’s truth penetrate the lies of the enemy which have served to rob you of what’s rightfully yours! May you walk in truth as you seek to know Him more and more! May you walk in your God-given identity as you learn what His word says! May the battles within your family be fought on your knees, where God always has the solution!

Meet me here next week when we’ll continue digging into Strategy 5: Your Past & Strategy 6: Your Fears

Standing and interceding with you,

Thoughts To Ponder

♥Note: We’ve barely hit the surface here. Discussion questions will serve you best after reading the week’s chapter.

1.) Did you realize there was an attack against your identity in Christ? Have you stopped to consider who God says you are? (Be sure to grab your Free printable to help get you started!)

2.) Can you pinpoint specific areas where the enemy has targeted your marriage, children, or family? How will you counterattack?

*All quotes taken from Priscilla Shirer’s, FERVENT Book, unless otherwise noted.

[*Note: Regarding hurts in families, we’re talking about the everyday issues that happen within families, not physical, sexual, or emotional abuse. If you’re in one of these unhealthy situations, please seek help from someone you can trust.]
