{Geography and History with Road Trip USA}

My 12 year old son and I began a road trip this week. It’s not exactly the kind of road trip most people take. I mean, we don’t have the car packed up with our stuff. We don’t really have a road map. And well, we’re not really leaving our house.

Nonetheless, it’s a road trip!

I found an awesome 1-2 year curriculum which takes you on a Road Trip through the USA. Each week you study one or two different states. You learn the location on the US map, the capital, the abbreviation, state bird, state flag, state wildlife, state flower, history and so much more. At the end of each week’s lessons, your child fills their Travel Log with a picture of the state flag.

So where did I find all this awesome information?

Erica, from Confessions of a Homeschooler Mom has so many amazing ideas and resources on her site. I love, love, love it!

(Check out her Candid Conversation With God. This was such an encouragement to me on my own homeschooling journey)

Erica’s Road Trip USA curriculum has so much to offer. It is jam-packed with links and resources. And the best part of it? It’s only $18.00. We printed out our first lesson and off we were… Instant road trip!!! I haven’t seen my son this excited in a while. See that amazing map in the background? That’s the US Wall Map he purchased on It’s gorgeous!

See how concentrated he is…

Our lesson began with the study of the  United States regions. We printed off this map from Jay colored off the different regions which include the:

The Northeast

The West

And here is my daughter’s map. She saw her big brother working on this so she also wanted to color the regions. How awesome is that? Who knew geography could bring two kids together.

He did his Student Workbook page by listing the States in each of the five regions  and well, as I’m siting here writing this blog, he is on the other laptop looking to purchase a globe. I’m speechless!!

So how about you? How do you have any great ideas for teaching history and geography? I’d love to hear from you.
