Take a Hold of Your Inheritance {and a printable}

There are mornings when we need to stand before God’s word until it washes our soul. Mornings when fear, worry, anxiety, and doubt creep up silently. We don’t hear a thing. Yet, we feel it’s strangling grip around our throat. Before we realize it, the heavy weight of it comes crashing down on our chest making it difficult to breathe. I felt that way this morning. I sat half-asleep on the couch, Bible open to the Psalms, coffee in hand. Defenses still low as I try to wake, read, and pray.

It’s how Satan comes to harass. When he thinks we’re the weakest. He’s wiley like that. Sneaky as can be. Can’t even let a girl wake up with her coffee before He attacks. If it wasn’t for the discernment of the Spirit, I’d lose the battle before the cup of coffee was even finished.

We fight battles we cannot see. We fight spiritual forces we don’t even know are coming at us. Ephesians 6 reminds us to put on the full armor of God. It clearly outlines the weapons we’ll need to counter the attack of the enemy. God knows the strategy of Satan. He knows the way he’ll attack, and He knows how best we can resist.

We haven’t been given the spirit of this world. Rather, we’ve been given the Spirit of truth which leads us, guides us, and teaches us, causing us to understand the things which are freely given to us by God (1 Cor. 2:12).

And so, on mornings like today when hell advances to rob, steal, and destroy… the Spirit of God within, our Helper and Advocate, brings to mind the words Jesus has spoken (John 14:26). He’s made strong in our weaknesses, His grace being enough (2 Cor. 12:9). Discernment rises up in us, and we’re able to put a name to that which only moments before was just a feeling.

This morning I stood before my wall of faithfulness, a monument to God’s faithfulness set up in my dining room.

I refused to sit and entertain anxiety. I refused to carry that which is not part of my inheritance. According to Ephesians 1:3, I’ve been blessed with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ. That means peace and joy are mine. They belong to me. Strength of spirit and a sound mind are mine. They, too, are part of my inheritance.

Perhaps you woke up this morning feeling the same way as I. Maybe there are other feelings and emotions trying to take a hold of you. Perhaps you can’t name them, you can’t place your finger on where they’re coming from, and you don’t know what to do about it. Can I encourage you today?

If you’re a child of God, then there’s an inheritance that belongs to you. However, our faith must be active. Begin to declare the promises of God over your life. Begin calling forth that which the Lord already promised. There’s a war going on for your peace, for your joy. Grab ahold of 2 Corinthian’s battle strategy: “casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, (10:5). Take the thoughts and feelings that speak contrary to God and His truth and make them submit to the authority of God’s word.

When you do, you’ll come out of that prayer with a different perspective, a strengthened heart and spirit, and a sound mind. The enemy has no alternative but to loosen his grip. Go ahead. Resist him. He’ll flee (James 4:7).

My friends, I want to encourage you today in your fight. I stood before these words this morning, and I didn’t stop declaring God’s truth until the lies of the enemy had no choice but to submit to God’s authority. You, too, can experience the freedom truth brings.
