{The Hidden Room: Get it before it gets you!}

Okay, let’s be honest. Do you have a cabinet, a closet, or even a room you dread walking into? And I guess I should mention that your source of dread comes from stuff… do you have one of those places in your home?

I’m amazed at how much clutter can accumulate in a home. Perhaps it’s due to America’s need to buy, buy, buy. You know how it goes. We see the next big thing and there we are at the check out line holding it in our hands. Or maybe your one of those collectors. You know, the one who needs another organizing basket, another set of dishes, another table-cloth, another picture frame.

We had a house fire in 2010. And each day, I am amazed at how much we’ve accumulated in just one year and a half. I spent 4 months in a hotel with just a few bins of ‘stuff”. So how exactly did we manage to gather so much in the last year and a half?

How did this look for us?

This weekend, my husband and I decided to tackle ‘that’ room in our house. It’s our bedroom. We never purchased dressers after the fire and let me just say, it’s been a nightmare keeping things in order. Most of the problem was clothes. And although we didn’t expect to do an entire room tear down, that’s what we ended up doing.

I guess I was inspired by the burden lifted off when I did last weeks’ organization sweep. The ida of going through my stuff with a KEEP, THROW AWAY, and GIVE AWAY pile revolutionized my way of thinking. Sure, I knew about this concept before. But trying it out and experiencing the freedom that comes from letting go of stuff… that’s an amazing feeling.

We simply began sorting through our clothes. Here are some of the rules we used when making decisions on what to keep and what to get rid of:

  • Does it fit. Realistically, is it going to fit in the next month or so?
  • Do you love it?
  • Is it comfortable? If you love it, but hate how you feel wearing it, then what’s the point?
  • Is it broken? Are you willing to fix it? If not… you know what to do with it.
  • Is it in good condition? Would someone else love that beautiful sweater that doesn’t fit you? Donate.
  • Does your wife hate it? …. Okay, okay, I added this one for my own selfish motives, but hey, can you blame me?

We did the same with shoes, bags, perfumes, lotions… I mean, seriously.

We vacuumed closets, wiped down walls and baseboards. With so much ‘stuff’ gone, we found more and more space. My husbands closet was a standing rack because of our very tiny closet. We were so inspired with the extra space, we combined our clothes in one closet, got rid of the clothes rack, tucked our treadmill away. Used our wicker under-bed storage baskets for our shoes. Put clean sheets… showered. And enjoyed an amazing night of sleep. It took a long time. And our intention wasn’t to do so much. But once you get started, it’s hard to stop.

My husband looked at me and said, “I’m really glad we did this. This feels good!”

And you know, it did feel good. In fact, it felt amazing.

We ended up with about 2 garbage bags of stuff. And 3 donation bags. How awesome is that?!

There is freedom that comes from letting go of all the stuff that just sits there, collecting dust and taking up space.

There is a burden lifted from disconnecting from all the stuff that we hold onto ‘just in case’ or ‘just because’ or ‘because we might need it one day’.

I like this new organization concept. It’s not new for everyone, but for me (actually implementing it) is. Simplifying my life is part of my pursuit. And I, my friend, am loving the results, satisfaction, and great freedom I find in it!
