The Unfolding Of God’s Story In Your Life

The Unfolding

Several days ago I picked up an old journal from 2011. I sat down and began thumbing through pages of my life. In the absence of a human audience, my soul poured out, naked and bare, before the King. This journal documents my soul-journey after our 2010 house fire. Something changed on the bathroom floor of the hotel suite we stayed at for four months. Being known by Him did something to my psyche. It’s as though a lifetime of bad wiring was intercepted by the Great Designer himself. He intervened and stopped the short-circuiting of thoughts long engrained in me.

Then, He began teaching me through His word, both Who He was and who I was in Him. Our family was facing numerous life-altering situations. It was difficult not to look at our lives and think, ‘Boy… God must have forgotten us’. If not for the transforming work of His Holy Spirit during our house fire, I would have continued to be led by my distorted image of God. Though His truth immediately sets us free, His grace and goodness led me, one step at a time, towards walking out that freedom in my daily life.

Here’s a little excerpt I found from April 18th, 2011:

“I want to stop and thank you. Thank You for the example you gave me when you walked into Jerusalem on a donkey. You could have required a “grand” entrance. Yet, you chose an entrance which exemplified humility and security in identity. Your entrance on a donkey tells me that you don’t need props to elevate yourself above others. You don’t need the gadgets and gizmos society tries to put on you in order to be “first class”.

As a matter of fact, even with your donkey, you remain in a class of your own; the royal class. A parade filled with people cheering and there you were, on a donkey. I would have loved to see your face. Were you smiling and rejoicing? Was your heart glad to hear the people saying, “Hosanna, King Jesus”? That must have been such an amazing moment.

Jesus teach me to be like You. Teach me to be secure in my identity that I don’t allow the donkey beneath me to humiliate me. Instead, let it help me to be more like You!!”

Page after page, I saw the prayers of an insecure, and highly misinformed, young-lady seeking truth. I saw a heart-broken girl yearning for truth… God’s truth, not man-made opinions of God. I saw my brokenness and pain, my questions and doubts, my insecurities and frustrations presented before the Lord, and ya’ll, all I could do was think, “Wow, Lord…You are real and you have been so good me.”

Days pass by, weeks, months, and years add on and we don’t see, we don’t remember, we don’t stop to appreciate where God has brought us from. But then, you open to letters inscribed on pieces of paper in the early hours of your storm-filled days, and you recognize: Surely, God was here and I didn’t even know it. Surely, He was at work and I didn’t even realize the extent of His transformation. Surely, He sent me on my own donkey, not to humiliate me, but that I might learn my acceptance, value, and identity apart from all that glitters and sparkles.

I could sit with you and share stories upon stories of all the obstacles, trials, and storms we’ve endured. I could sit and spend hours upon hours sharing with you the ‘donkeys’ God used to humble us, teach us, and force us to find our value in who we are in Christ. Jesus didn’t have that problem. He knew His identity. But me, well, let’s just say I had a lot of baggage to sort through.

Oh, but His kindness and gentleness with me. The way His God-breathed word taught, instructed, rebuked, corrected, and trained me in righteousness that I might be fully equipped for every good work (2 Tim. 3:16)… yeah, He’s been so good to me.

Friends, I’ve been misunderstood, rejected, and cast off. And yet, I was accepted in the Beloved (Eph. 1:6). What else is there, then? What else could matter? What else could keep us holding on and hoping? Believing and opening our hearts and hands to receive what He lavishly pours out?

This is not a ‘sob’ story, a ‘poor-me-nobody-loves-me’ story.

Rather, it’s a ‘God-is-good-and-His-faithfulness-continues-through-all-generations’ story.

It’s a ‘God-is-love-and-His-faithful-love-heals-redeems-saves-and-restores’ story.

It’s a ‘you-may-not-see-it-right-now-but-God-is-orchestrating-the-events-and-details-of-your-life’ story.

It’s a ‘don’t-lean-on-your-own-understanding-God’s-sovereign-will-over-your-life-shall-prevail’ story.

This is not ‘my’ story.

This is God’s story.

Your story, too.

Because He’s working out a beautiful story with your life. Because He’s active in the background (and in the forefront if you open your eyes and really ‘see’). Because He’s so good. He can’t help it. It’s part of His character ( Ps. 100:5). Because He absolutely loves you and wants to fix a lifetime of bad wiring in your mind. Because He has plans for your life and wants to intervene. He’s come that you might have life abundantly (John 10:10).

A stroll through the pages of my life left me with praise on my lips, and gratitude in my heart. I’m so sure, if you’d look at where He’s brought you from, you’ll find a little song of praise and a heart of gratitude begin to bubble up inside of you, too!

Here’s to the unfolding of God’s story in your life!

“Praise him for his mighty acts: praise him according to his excellent greatness.” -Ps. 150:2

“O give thanks unto the Lord; call upon his name: make known his deeds among the people.” -Ps. 105:1

“He is your praise, and He is your God, who has done for you these great and awesome things which your eyes have seen.” -Deut. 10:21

“Sing to him; yes, sing his praises. Tell everyone about his wonderful deeds.” -1 Chron. 16:9
